What Is Moringa? Nutrition Breakdown

Moringa oleifera, also known as Moringa pteridosperms, is a tree that grows in most tropical regions and is indigenous to Southern Asian countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. In those areas, however, it is more commonly known as horseradish tree, miracle tree, and drumstick tree.

The people of those areas covet the leaves of the tree for their nutritional value, which includes antioxidants, chlorophyll, carotenoids, saponins, flavonoids, and easily digested proteins. Pound for pound, Moringa has more calcium than milk and more potassium than bananas.

For example, just 3.5 oz (100 g) of moringa leaves has only 64 calories and all these nutrients.

Nutrient Amount % Daily Value (DV)
Protein 9.4 g 19%
Fat 1.4 g 2%
Carbohydrates 8.3 g 3%
Dietary Fiber 2.0 g 7%
Vitamin A (Beta-Carotene) 7380 IU 147%
Vitamin C 51.7 mg 57%
Vitamin E 4.0 mg 27%
Vitamin K 100 mcg 83%
Folate 40 mcg 10%
Riboflavin (B2) 0.66 mg 51%
Niacin (B3) 2.2 mg 14%
Vitamin B6 1.2 mg 71%
Calcium 185 mg 14%
Magnesium 147 mg 35%
Phosphorus 112 mg 16%
Potassium 337 mg 7%
Iron 4.0 mg 22%

Unlike other plants, Moringa leaves provide complete protein, containing all 9 essential amino acids, making them an attractive option for vegans. The nutrient density of this food is why it's a popular natural way to combat malnutrition in some underdeveloped countries.

Moringa Research: Summary of Health Benefits

The moringa tree has been rumored in folklore to cure more than 300 diseases. The effects on most health conditions, however, have not been proven, so let's summarize what is known about when people consume moringa oleifera leaf extract.

Anticancer Effects

Moringa leaves contain compounds called glucosinolates, niazimicin, and benzyl isothiocyanate, which are thought to be central to the plant's effects at reducing cancer risk, but not the way most people think.

While yes, the leaves do contain antioxidants, these three biological molecules are thought to support healthy cell growth by generating free radicals called reactive oxygen species (ROS), which damage cancer cell membranes, leading to their demise. Much of this research is related to animals and cells, but it provides at least preliminary evidence of hope for those with a history of this disease.

Another moringa compound, called Zeatin, has been shown to be poisonous to skin and prostate cancers. At least one human clinical trial involving people with pre-cancerous oral lesions called leukoplakia revealed that topical moringa gel reduced the size of the lesions by 77%.

Blood Sugar Effects

Several researchers have reported moringa seems to have blood sugar-lowering effects. For example, when men and women with prediabetes consumed moringa leaf powder for 3 months, reductions in fasting blood sugar and HbA1c were observed.

Another clinical trial revealed that a single dose of 1 to 4 grams of moringa significantly raised insulin levels.  In a review, it was noted that 71% of studies (5 out of 7) showed reductions in fasting blood glucose in diabetics who took moringa leaf powder.

In another study involving women going through menopause, moringa supplements resulted in an 18% rise in the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase and a 10.4% increase in superoxide dismutase (SOD) after three months of use. Those people were also rewarded with a 13.5% reduction in fasting blood sugar levels.

Because not all studies show lower blood sugar or HbA1c, more human research on diabetes and metabolic syndrome is needed.

Immunity Effects

While human experimentation needs to be conducted, research on animals suggests moringa has the potential to reduce allergic reactions. Other research suggests the leaves of this tree may lower antibody production, which means it might benefit those with autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and reduce chronic inflammation.

Kaempherol, one of the moringa flavonoids, has been shown to have antimicrobial effects. Another compound, called isoquercitrin, appears to disrupt the expression of virus genes, moringa-magic-moringa-leaves-nutritionwhich means it may forestall virus replication.

Moringa supplements have been demonstrated to improve anemia and white blood cell counts in HIV-positive adults. More research is needed on whether it lowers CD4 counts.

The vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients in moringa likely also contribute to supporting a healthy immune response.

Moringa And Blood Pressure

In at least one clinical trial, it was reported that when healthy people consumed moringa leaves, diastolic blood pressure (the bottom number) was reduced two hours after eating. More studies are needed to determine whether this effect also occurs in people with high blood pressure.

Moringa and Weight Loss

Moringa contains chlorogenic acid, also found in green coffee beans. Because of this, it has been proposed that moringa powder may be effective as a weight reduction aid.

In one trial, the combination of moringa and curcumin promoted a rise in adiponectin, although the weight loss was not deemed statistically significant.

Other studies have likewise hinted it may be effective; however, those trials also combine moringa with other compounds. Thus, it is not known if moringa leaf extract – itself- is effective for people trying to shed weight.

Does Moringa Help Exercise Performance?

When young adults were given moringa powder supplements for just 30 days, it was reported they could perform more pushups and last longer on the treadmill before exhaustion occurred compared to those who were given placebos. If corroborated, this may indicate that moringa leaf powder may benefit both strength and aerobic athletes.

Asthma Improvement

In at least one study, people with asthma showed improvement in symptoms when they took powdered moringa seeds for three weeks. This study needs to be replaced by others and it is not known if moringa leaf extract would have the same effects.

Effects on Cholesterol

Some research suggests moringa may enhance the effects of some cholesterol medications. In one study, people taking moringa plus a statin called atorvastatin showed lower cholesterol and triglycerides compared to those who only took the medication.

Malnutrition

When 30 children suffering from malnutrition were given moringa leaf powder for two months, 77% of those kids experienced a 20% gain in weight compared to children who did not receive moringa powder.

Wound Healing

This supplement has become popular in some circles as a natural wound-care alternative. Most of the claims for this effect are mostly attributed to moringa paste that is placed topically on the skin. While a few studies use supplements, more research is needed to determine their effectiveness.

How moringa improves wound healing is open to speculation, with some feeling it improves collagen synthesis, while others believe it's due to moringa's ability to seal wounds by forming blood clots.

Others propose that the plant's antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties play a role.

Is Moringa Magic on Amazon?

The fact is Moringa Magic contains only high-quality moringa leaf powder. It does not contain artificial sweeteners, stimulants or trendy ingredients like garcinia cambogia, raspberry ketones, ashwagandha or others.

Moringa Taste: Not For The Faint Of Heart

In its raw state, moringa leaves have a bitter taste, like pepper or spice. Supplements like Morniga Magic capsules avoid this pitfall, and as an added bonus, there is no aftertaste either.

Moringa Magic Side Effects

The first thing to know is no side effects are known to occur from taking Moringa Magic supplements. Moringa is also generally thought to be safe. That said, caution is wise for those who are not healthy. Here are some ideas to aid in reducing negative effects you may have.

  • Start with less than recommended for the first week. Give your body time to adjust.
  • Stop taking at least two weeks before having surgery, including dental surgery.
  • Don't take more than what is recommended by the company.
  • Because it lowers blood sugar, in theory, moringa may interfere with diabetes medications.
  • Animal research suggests that moringa may inhibit thyroid hormone synthesis. However, this has not been documented in humans.
  • In one report, a man developed diarrhea after consuming very high doses (8000 mg).  This is much more than Moringa Magic contains.
  • Moringa may have a blood-clotting effect, so consult your physician if you take blood thinner medications.
  • Avoid supplements that contain the roots or bark of Moringa, as it may not be safe.

Conclusions: Is Moringa Magic Legit?

A decent amount of human research suggests powdered leaf extracts of moringa have health effects. While the supplement itself has not been clincally tested in humans, this is also true for most supplements. The fact that Moringa Magic has only one ingredient is a testament that the company is aware of the proof and believes this to be a worthwhile product. While some results, such as improved energy levels, may manifest within 30 to 60 days, for others, like lowering HbA1c, it may take three months.
